Innovating Food For 75 Years

Founded in 1946 by a research chemist named Stuart Hanan, Hanan Products is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2021. The company started when a friend of Stuart’s approached him about making whipped dessert toppings. After extensive product research and testing, and developing dozens of unique product formulations, Hanan created Tasty Whip. Once in production, Stuart would carry cases of his whipped topping on the subway, delivering the sought-after product to bakeries throughout the region.

Today, Hanan Products produces between 8 million and 9 million pounds of whipped toppings, icings, and dessert fillings annually, selling wholesale to supermarket bakeries, stand-alone bakeries, and foodservice/institutional customers. To date, with a global customer base, Hanan has put the icing on more than 300 million cakes. Hanan’s Chief Operating Officer Ryan Hanan says, “If you’ve bought a cake on Long Island, you’ve likely tried our delicious products.”

Over the past 75 years, the company has continued its tradition of innovation. A recent article in the Long Island Business News tells of the company’s humble beginnings - and of its growth and expansion. The company now makes products for customers with varying needs including vegan, all natural, gluten-free, dairy-free, kosher, and more. Hanan also makes a vegan ice cream mix that’s is amazingly delectable. Along with ready-to-whip products the company offers pre-whipped products for customers who produce high volume baked goods.

In 2021, Hanan earned a Vegan Action (vegan.org ) Certification for its Whip Deelite line. Few sectors within the food industry are growing faster than vegan, which has seen a 500% increase in worldwide growth since 2014. Since 1995, Vegan Action has been known as the “gold standard” vegan mark. With this certification, customers can be sure that Hanan’s Whip Deelite Base Concentrate, Whip Deelite Vanilla Fluid, and Whip Deelite Select contain, and/or are processed with, no animal products or animal byproducts and have not been involved in any animal testing. Hanan saw this as an opportunity to produce high performing, delicious whipped toppings for customers with vegan clienteles.

In addition to its vegan line, there has been a recent push in the industry for all natural and clean label products. Therefore, Hanan has debuted two new, all natural products: Whip Deelite Pure and HPT Pure. Both whipped toppings incorporate world class stability, the cleanest label possible, and ingredients you can actually pronounce.

As you can see, 75-year-old Hanan continues to innovate and help its customers remain relevant…and competitive. The Long Island Business News article says, “And the family business’ humble beginnings remain part of the corporate legacy. This much is evident by a wooden spoon that resides in the Hicksville headquarters. It’s the spoon that Stuart Hanan used in the 1940s, when he stirred the whipped toppings personally in a large vat for a company whose sweet offerings would be known the world over.”
